We recognised in 1992 that Management Development aspired to a more professional reputation and we ourselves wanted to be recognised as professionals. However all other “professions” have a body of knowledge that defines their status and ensures quality of membership. This was lacking in Management Development in any structured way and therefore our investment in Research set out to address this need.
Initially funded internally to the tune of approximately 10% of our turnover each year the first piece of research led to the creation of The Wadenhoe Model® (for making Management Development strategically effective) and the publication of our first book.
The Wadenhoe Model® now sits at the heart of all of our interventions in both consultancy and management development assignments.
Widely admired by our clients, we were able to persuade a group of blue chip organisations to fund a consortium approach to “Putting a measure on management development”.
The passion behind this work was our desire to stop Management Development interventions being seen as a “cost” rather than an “investment”. To be justified as an investment there must be a measurable benefit and this research project established a methodology for ensuring that this link was created before the intervention.
We followed up this work with the establishment of The Wadenhoe Centre (for strategic research) with member organisations paying an annual subscription to drive the research agenda and to gain access to the emerging research models.
Outcomes from this work have included:
- Auditing Natural Learning
- Identifying People with International Leadership Potential
- Identifying and Developing High Potential
- Putting a Measure on Management Development
- Mental Models of Team Development
- Leading and Managing Change
- Ethical Issues in Leadership
- Supporting a Leadership Development Culture
We are currently reviewing the most appropriate model for driving forward our research activities whilst actively turning the existing research into successful implementation.
Some of our research thinking and Occasional Paper Series are available to organisations and individuals through the “log on” registration process on this website.
