Our client was a media group that had recently been sold off from an International Newspaper Group. Spread from east to west of the country the Group comprised a number of profit centres with a wide variety of history, but especially a history of independence!

Our brief initially was to work on the development of the senior teams of each profit centre to increase financial performance and to make performance management more predictable.

However, our Analysis showed a lack of a clear and consistent strategy for the Group or even a consistent approach to strategic thinking and implementation.

In line with our values, we identified this for the client whilst at the same time declining to work on the original brief because the benefits for taking this approach could not be identified without a clear strategy.

The client accepted our recommendations and we subsequently worked with the Main Board and the individual profit centres to introduce a pragmatic but rigorous approach to strategic thinking and implementation.

The strategic review at the year end demonstrated the transformation that was taking place and the budgeting process was both consistent, credible and non-confrontational!

In the light of the emerging strategy we were able to redefine the roles of managers throughout the organisation and the skills and capabilities that managers and leaders needed to deliver success.

A development programme was successfully implemented from top to bottom of the organisation over a three year period with measurable benefits to the Group and its shareholders.
