Hertfordshire Constabulary

The Wadenhoe Consultancy has been working with Hertfordshire Constabulary since 2002 implementing an organisation-wide leadership programme.

Our starting points were:

  • To develop a deep understanding of all aspects of the overarching Police Service Strategy, including key areas such as Community Partnerships and Diversity.
  • To work with the Constabulary in the development of a Leadership Capabilities framework that would complement the National competency Framework and underpin their Values, which, at that time, were also being reviewed.

This preliminary work provided the context for the development of Leadership Development Programmes that now form a key part of the organisation’s promotion process.

Targets for leadership development have been integrated with National Policing Targets.

Our work can be summarised into three levels of activity:

Leadership development workshops for senior managers (Chief Inspectors/Superintendents) which focus on specific leadership challenges identified by individuals/teams and clearly identify key objectives, development plans and measures against the Constabulary’s policing plan.

Executive Diploma in Management for Middle Managers (Inspectors and equivalent) which provides managers with a comprehensive understanding of all functional areas of management and leadership. More information on this Programme is given in the “Develop” section of this website.

Diploma in Management for First line managers (sergeants and equivalent) which concentrates on the practical application of management and provides a foundation for continuing personal development. More information on this Programme is given in the “Develop” section of this website.

Over 110 managers are involved in the Executive Diploma in Management and 180 in the Diploma in Management. All senior command teams have been involved in the tailored leadership workshops.

Comments from participants of the Leadership Programme:

“Excellent delivery by the tutor who clearly knows his subject well and had good examples of the theory in practice”.

“Controlled well by the tutor when issues and questions raised, showed flexibility”.

“The material is of the usual high standard and will certainly be appropriate to me now and as my career develops”.

“Very useful. Finally a little help with problem solving rather than more problems that need to be solved!”

“A well paced module with the appropriate use of small and large group work. The trainer obviously knows the subject inside out and is very passionate about it. This is reflected in the quality of the content and her willingness to explain and give a range of working examples”.

“The content is very appropriate for our level of leadership and provides key tools and insights to concepts that can be practically applied in the workplace”

The Programmes are still going strong with forward plans into 2007.
